In 2000 Broadband was relatively unheard of to the average UK Internet user. Today in the UK over 50% of all internet users are on Broadband. This generally means a greatly enhanced browsing experience as web page loads, general downloads (music, images etc) now happen a lot faster. In 2000 the broadband infrastructure was simply not in place, and thus it is my belief that this had something to do with the .com bubble which you often here about in the IT world.
Standard broadband speeds start at 512kb – which is a great bandwidth improvement on the old dial-up. This is great for fast web and email access, but not that good if you plan to download video or play online gaming for example. Most internet service providers now provide broadband speeds of 512kb, 1Mb, 2Mb, 4Mb and 8Mb. Of course, the monthly price will reflect this. It's best to work out what you will use broadband for, and choosing a speed appropriate to your needs.
